There are lots of factors and elements that come into becoming the top marketer in your field. Today, we’ll get started with the basics — writing an effective resume that can help you land your next job as a digital marketing specialist.
Digital marketing resume sections
As you can see, the sample resume above is divided into several sections:
- Header
- Resume Summary
- Professional Experience
- Education
- References
Dividing your resume into sections like these serves several purposes.
First, it makes your resume much more readable — compared to a simple block of text. It gives the hiring manager a chance to quickly identify the information they are looking for.
Second, it's a great way to highlight the most important information that you want the HR professional to see first.
Finally, a lot of companies these days use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to sort through the resumes they receive. In short, with the help of this software, HR managers can minimize the number of applications they have to review in person by rejecting resumes that don’t fit the job description.
Dividing your resume into sections with standard titles like “Professional experience”, “Education”, etc. and using the right keywords (like the ones used in the job ad) makes your resume more readable to applicant tracking systems. You can read more about how they work and what you can do to make your resume ATS-friendly here.
Now, let’s take a look at each section in a bit more detail.
The header of your resume is the easiest section to write. Here, you will simply need to include your full name and one or several ways to get in touch with you. You can add professional credentials to your name — like PCM (professionally certified marketing manager).
Go on to include the way in which you prefer to be contacted: your phone number, email, etc. It’s best if you use an email address registered with one of the popular providers such as Gmail or Outlook. Also, try to keep the email address itself clean and professional — like “lastname.firstname@gmail.com”.
It’s also a good idea to include a link to your profile on professional social media (like LinkedIn) or a link to your online portfolio. This way, the person reviewing your resume can have a quick look at your work and have a better idea of your work experience.
Resume summary
The summary is one of the key parts of your resume. Here, you will need to sum up your work experience and skill set. Be as specific as you can as your resume summary should be no longer than just a few lines. Use numbers, references to your certification, specific skills, notable professional accomplishments, etc.
Professional Experience
Writing this section of your resume shouldn’t be too complicated. You will simply need to include your latest work experience that is the most relevant to the job you are applying for.
There are several ways in which you can approach this:
You can list your experience in reverse chronological order. In this case, you will start with your latest position and proceed to “go back in time”. With this format, your work experience takes centre stage — and it’s a great choice if you have a lot of professional experience in your field.
In addition to simply listing the positions you’ve had previously, you can briefly touch on what your responsibilities were or mention your most prominent achievements in that role.
You can base your resume on your skill set. Such resume formats are called functional and are recommended for those who don’t have much work experience yet. In this case, instead of listing your job titles, you will focus on your skills and what you’ve done to attain them.
Finally, you can use a mix of both formats above: one part of your resume content will focus on your experience, while the other will emphasize your skill set.

Note, however, that most recruiters do prefer and are more used to the reverse chronological resume format. So, this is what we have kept to in our resume sample above.
The language you use is also important. While there is nothing wrong (in theory) with getting creative with your resume, in most cases, it’s best to keep things simple. This has a lot to do with the applicant tracking systems we’ve mentioned earlier — this software may be on the lookout for specific keywords like “digital marketing professional” or “marketing campaign redesign”. Thus, getting too descriptive with your resume and using different language may actually work against you. The best strategy here would be to look at the type of language and “keywords” that the job ad uses and base your resume voice on that.
Education
In this part of your resume, highlight your most relevant education. This typically includes your college degree and major as well as any certification and courses relevant to the job you are applying for.
If there is still space in your resume, you can use it to add any other information that can make you stand out among other applicants. This can be a list of the work projects that you are most proud of, key milestones in your career, languages you speak, volunteer work, etc. HR experts also agree that this is a good place to include references from previous workplaces or clients. You can also mention that references will be provided upon request.
Summing up
To create an effective digital marketing specialist resume, do the following:
- Use the resume format that is the most favorable to your professional situation.
- Complete your header with contact information and links to a relevant social media account or online portfolio.
- Include a resume summary that brings forward your most valued skills and qualifications.
- Be as specific as you can when it comes to your work experience: mention key responsibilities and accomplishments.
- Make sure your application matches the style and tone of the job ad you are responding to.
- Keep your resume clean and simple — in case it is first reviewed by applicant tracking systems.
- Mention additional skills that may be relevant to the position: foreign languages, soft skills, etc.
- Add references.
